I read somewhere that the Academy loves to give awards to actors that play characters that go through a personal struggle or has some sort of personal growth. For example when Colin Firth won his award respectably, it was because his character overcame his personal struggle, stuttering. In this article it also had a chart of actors that either won an award or were nominated for playing characters that fall in to that category. One example was when Daniel Day Lewis won his first Oscar for his lead role in "My Left Foot" because his character suffered from cerebral palsy. Another is when Tom Hanks won his second Oscar for "Forrest Gump", his character suffered from a mental disorder. Here is to name a few that I remember from the article (not in any order):
Hilary Swank- Million Dollar Baby - Sexism - Won
Jamie Foxx- Ray- Blindness/ Drug Addiction- Won
John Hurt- The Elephant Man- Deformity- Nominated
Sally Field- Places in the Heart- Widowhood- Won
Al Pacino- Scent of a Woman- Blindness- Won
Charlize Theron- North Country- Sexism- Nominated
Adrien Brody- The Pianist- Nazism- Won
Will Smith- The Pursuit of Happyness- Homelessness- Nominated
Ok so where am I going with this? Well If I recall Leo hasn't played something that tremendous yet. Not to say his characters are not amazing or Oscar-worthy, but if the Academy goes for these types of characters, well I think it's time for him to give them what they want. And when he does win, there will be a standing ovation and parade of long-time fan girls (including me) cheering him on. Also the director that leads him to his Oscar win deserves the Noble Peace Prize, seriously -because if Scorsese and Nolan can't bring Leo to an Oscar win then the director that does shall be praised.
